The Future Computed – Artificial Intelligence and its role in society
What opportunities and risks does Artificial Intelligence pose personally and professionally, at a private and public level? How fast do we as a society have to be able to commit to fundamental rules for using AI systems? In his book The Future Computed, Brad Smith examines these questions and calls for all future AI systems to comply with a series of ethical principles. He also signals the need for new laws.
How can the use of Artificial Intelligence be regulated?
Brad Smith believes this is a task that needs to start with a global discussion with representatives from politics, business, science, associations and civil society. This requires an accountability of sorts for everyone who develops AI systems. To do so, Microsoft has defined six ethical principles designed to lay the foundations for the development and use of AI: Fairness, reliability, data protection & security, inclusivity, transparency and responsibility.
Steering the AI era onto the right track
Smith is confident AI will change our lives more than all digital technologies before it. It enables environmental risks to be better controlled, resources to be used more sensibly, and disease and poverty to be combated. AI is a particularly powerful tool, meaning responsible usage is imperative.
